Industrial

heavy duty air conditioning - for heavy duty problems Heavy Duty Air Conditioning

The Problem

Industrial problems often seem to require industrial sized solutions - with corresponding high costs.

The key to restricting costs is the efficient application of the most cost effective air conditioning technology.

The many factors which contribute to the need for cooling often include :

  • specialized process requirements
  • high lighting levels
  • heat emissions from processes and equipment
  • ingress of hot air from outside

The Solution

Industrial sites may often require either the application of custom-built air conditioning plants or the creative use of standardized equipment to solve your problems.

At HMC, we have the technical knowledge to deal with any air conditioning requirement for all environments.

Residential

comfort within your home - easily achievable with the latest equipment Comfort Within Your Home

The Problem

Many areas in the home often get uncomfortably hot. Typical areas which may have a need for cooling include bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms and drawing rooms

The Solution

Traditionally, air conditioning has been considered both too expensive and too obtrusive for use in the domestic environment - but now the latest systems have been made much smaller with an attractive modern appearance - and cost a lot less.

For domestic clients, we normally recommend either split systems or self contained window systems.

Split systems

These comprise of :

  • an outdoor unit - located outside the cooling area
  • an indoor unit - located in the room to be cooled
  • interconnecting small bore refrigerant pipe-work

In bedrooms and kitchens where low level wall space is limited, the choice of equipment will normally be a high level wall mounted system.

The Problem

The many factors which contribute to rising temperature levels in an office environment include the following :

  • high density of occupants
  • high lighting levels
  • heat emissions from computers and other equipment
  • solar gain from large areas of glass

The Solution

Where the office has a suspended ceiling or other ceiling void, ceiling cassette systems represent an effective and unobtrusive method of controlling temperature.

Depending upon the number of offices to be treated and their location, multiple outdoor units or a single multi-split or VRV outdoor unit (as shown below) may be installed

Retail

keeping your stock in perfect condition - and your customers

The Problem

If the customer is uncomfortable, it is a proven fact that their stay will be short and their spend low. In shops with perishable products, products can be damaged by high temperatures. The many factors which contribute to the need for cooling often include :

  • high density of customers
  • high lighting levels
  • heat emissions from product displays and refrigeration equipment
  • ingress of hot air from outside via open doors

The Solution

Where the shop has a suspended ceiling or other ceiling void, ceiling cassette systems represent an effective and unobtrusive method of controlling temperature.

Dependant on the size of area to be treated and its location, multiple outdoor units or a single multi-split outdoor unit may be installed

Restaurants

keeping your customers comfortable

The Problem

Uncomfortable customers are bad for business and increasingly customers expect air conditioning to be fitted in restaurants. The many factors which contribute to the need for cooling often include :

  • high density of customers
  • high lighting levels
  • heat emissions from food servings
  • ingress of hot air from kitchen areas

The Solution

Where the restaurant has a suspended ceiling or other ceiling void, ceiling cassette systems represent an effective and unobtrusive method of controlling temperature.

If aesthetics dictate that the air conditioning must be invisible to the customer then a concealed ducted indoor unit may be installed as shown below.

Studios

control of temperature and noise - in a high tech environment

The Problem

Recording and radio studios present a technically challenging problem for those involved in the provision of air conditioning. Control of temperature is of paramount importance whilst maintaining noiseless conditions

Studios will have a year round need for cooling in order to maintain comfortable conditions. Factors which contribute towards the need for cooling include:

  • highly insulated noise proof construction
  • heat emission from lighting
  • heat emission from equipment
  • heat emission from people
  • the need to provide fresh air for staff in this closed environment

The Solution

Ducted air conditioning systems having ultra low velocity air flows and careful selection of air distribution terminal devices can provide silent and draught free control of temperature with integrated provision of filtered fresh air for ventilation purposes.

We apply highly efficient attenuation measures to the ductwork to reduce noise levels and utilize equipment having the lowest available noise levels.

For the larger studio projects, the constant heat produced by the studio and racks rooms can be recovered and used to heat ancillary areas during the winter months leading to significant savings in energy costs for the building.

Using the latest equipment and techniques, the cost of having high performance air conditioning has never been lower.

Call Centers

Maintaining staff performance by providing a comfortable environment

The Problem

Call centers present special problems in terms of environmental management. High premises costs lead to a heavy concentration of both staff and IT equipment. Factors which need to be taken into account include :

  • Large heat gain from high concentrations of staff in a confined space
  • High heat gains from IT equipment and lighting
  • Essential requirement for mechanical ventilation because of numbers of staff
  • The requirement for a low noise environment to enable efficient call handling

Design considerations

Careful selection of equipment is required in order to ensure that adequate cooling is installed – it is not uncommon for clients to have air conditioning installed which is far too less to meet the required cooling capacity.

It is essential that the recommended minimum fresh air requirement is met in order to comply with current building regulations, and also to ensure that staff concentration and comfort is maintained. This will normally require the installation of a separate mechanical ventilation system which provides the correct amount of filtered fresh air for the number of persons and will also provide an equivalent extract of stale air.

All equipment within the space must be installed in a manner which minimizes noise – our experience with studio air conditioning gives us the expertise to be easily able to achieve this.

The Solution to control of temperature

To control temperature we will usually recommend the use of multiple ceiling cassette mounted systems – these are available in a variety of sizes and configurations to suit any size call centre. Single or multiple outdoor units may be used depending on requirements

Ceiling cassette indoor units to control temperature

The ventilation solution

To provide mechanical ventilation we recommend heat exchanger ventilation units which offer significant advantages in terms of the following :

  • Reduced running costs
  • Competitive equipment costs
  • Flexibility due to modular configuration
  • Low noise levels

Computer Rooms

Keeping your essential equipment functioning perfectly

The Problem

Computer rooms are an essential part of modern commerce – however heat emitted from IT equipment can rapidly raise temperatures, especially in confined spaces such as server rooms.

Factors which need to be taken into account include :

  • High heat gains from IT equipment and lighting
  • The need for reliability
  • Consideration of backup systems for mission critical applications
  • Control of humidity and high specification filtration where necessary

The Solution

To control temperature in a simple computer room we will usually recommend the use of high level wall mounted systems – these have the distinct advantage that in the event of drain blockage, condensate water will not drip on to your essential IT equipment.

We select only the most thoroughly engineered equipment for computer rooms – equipment which we know to have a proven record of reliability.

Where the client’s IT equipment requires humidity and temperature control or high specification filtration, we are able to supply specialist computer type air-conditioning systems having this facility.

If the client’s IT processes are mission critical and air conditioning shutdown would result in IT equipment failure – then we will propose the use of multiple systems to give resilience against failure – if necessary with run and standby systems.

Hotels

comfort for your customers and added value for you

The Problem

Customers expect to feel comfortable not only in reception, restaurant & bar areas but also in bedrooms. Hotel bedrooms present a considerable challenge where air conditioning is concerned.

Low noise levels are essential and ###The Problems of location of equipment dictate the use of the most compact equipment available. Cost constraints and the need for efficient control, often including occupancy activated control requires the application of specially designed hotel room type indoor units.

Factors which need to be taken into account include the following :

  • Occupation frequency and warm up times
  • Noise levels
  • Seamless integration with bedroom decor

The Solution

To control temperature we will usually recommend the use of concealed duct mounted systems located above the entrance lobby – these have ultra low noise levels and grilles can be painted to match room decor for an invisible appearance.

Hotel bedroom with concealed low noise air conditioning unit located above entrance lobby

Individual outdoor units may be used on small sites or on larger projects where a single VRV outdoor unit can be used to operate tens of indoor units in both cooling and heating mode.

Occupancy activated controls and sophisticated scheduling are also available to ensure that absolute minimum running costs are achieved.

Medical

control of temperature for the benefit of equipment, staff and patients

The Problem

Medical areas are subject to increasing heat loads from the proliferation of computers, high lighting levels and specialist medical equipment.

Staff are under increasing pressure and the maintenance of comfortable conditions contributes to the well being of both patients and medical staff. Factors which need to be taken into account include the following:

  • Specialist equipment requirements
  • Patient occupancy levels
  • Controlled conditions for medical processes and materials

The Solution

To control temperature we will usually recommend the use of commercially available air conditioning systems used for comfort cooling and heating over a wide range of applications.
